A Homecoming Mum is a long-standing Texas high school tradition worn during Homecoming week, typically at school and at the Homecoming football game. These decorative pieces are a fun and meaningful way for students to celebrate school spirit and showcase their personality. Traditionally, mums are worn by girls and garters are worn by boys, though today many students choose whichever style they prefer. A Homecoming Mum is created using silk chrysanthemums and decorative acetate ribbons, along with braids, trinkets, bells, charms, and themed cutouts. Designs range from small Peewee mums to large multi-flower styles and even Texas-shaped designs. Most mums are worn like a necklace using a ribbon that ties around the neck. Typical ribbon lengths include: • 12–15 inches for Peewee mums • 24 inches for medium-length mums • 36 inches for full-length mums • Our Peewee mums come standard with 12-inch ribbons, while our other mums come standard with 36-inch ribbons. If you would prefer extra-large Peewee (15-inch) or medium-length ribbons, please indicate this when placing your order. A Homecoming Garter is a smaller version of a mum, usually featuring approximately 18-inch ribbons. Garters can come in single, double, triple, or Texas-shaped designs and are typically worn on the arm using an elastic garter strap or bandana. Many students coordinate their garter colors to match their date’s mum. Both mums and garters are customized with braids, trinkets, bells, and cutouts, creating a one-of-a-kind design that reflects the wearer’s personality, school activities, sports, and organizations.

Choosing the right mum size largely comes down to personal preference and how elaborate you would like your design to be. Traditionally, mum sizes have been associated with grade level, with designs becoming larger each year of high school. A common guideline is: • Freshmen: Single mum • Sophomores: Double mum • Juniors: Triple mum • Seniors: Quadruple mums, Texas-shaped designs, or specialty mega shapes (such as paw prints, megaphones, or crowns) While this tradition is still popular, many students today choose the size that best fits their style and personality rather than strictly following grade-level guidelines. Most underclassmen tend to select single, double, or triple mums, while many seniors celebrate their final Homecoming with a larger, more elaborate design. Ultimately, the perfect mum size is the one that reflects your personality, school spirit, and how big you want to celebrate Homecoming.

If you have a Homecoming date, you may choose to include details that represent them as well, such as their name, jersey number, sport, or shared activities, creating a design that celebrates your connection. Whether you choose a traditional mum or a larger, more elaborate senior design, each mum or garter is thoughtfully created with ribbons, charms, and accents that make it a unique representation of your high school journey.

Seniors have historically worn white mums accented with either silver or gold, depending on their school’s accent colors. In recent years, many seniors have moved away from the traditional white mum and instead choose colors that reflect their personal style and personality. It has become increasingly popular to see seniors incorporate fun and unique color combinations such as pink, purple, blue, or green into their designs. If seniors would like a custom mum color that differs from traditional school colors, we are happy to accommodate special requests. Please note that custom color selections will include an additional upgrade fee.
